FDR & The Holocaust

The Holocaust was a terrible period of suffering for the Semites in Europe. Racist Adolf Hitler ordered the execution and brutality of millions of Jews all around Europe. Jews were faced with terrible conditions in concentration camps: starvation, hunger, gas chambers, extermination, family and friends separation, and terrible sleeping conditions were experienced by all.

These horrid events took place, but did people know about this? People started realizing that Jews were disappearing in multiplying numbers in a very short period of time, and got suspicious.

FDR, as a major world leader especially of a nation of the United States (a nation active in human rights preservance), did very little to help the gruesome situation of the Jews in Europe. He was well aware of the atrocities going on, however did not use his great political power to speak out about it. At the time, the world was largely anti-semitic, and he did not want to lose public support by supporting the Jews.

At this time, flocks of Jews desperately tried to escape their fate by immigrating to other nations. This mass immigration made countries impose limitations specifically onto the Jews, preventing them from entering their countries.

FDR let in "persons of exceptional merit" into U.S. borders - totaling to about 100,000 refugees. After these were accepted, the U.S. "closed the doors" on the Jewish people. Some reasons for preventing them coming was the circumstance of the time. It was the time of the Great Depression, and people feared that letting in a mass amount of people would take away Americans jobs and would threaten economic healing.

Despite FDR's mere "sympathy" for the Jews, he did not do much to aid the Jews combat one of history's worst genocides.

  1. Great summary on FDR's attitude towards the Holocaust. I am surprised that FDR did little to stop the inhumane act in order to prevent losing his supporters.
